Mayim Bialik on the science of saving lives:

About the Miracle Match Campaign

Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation helps children and adults suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, and other cancers and genetic disorders find matching donors for blood and marrow transplants. Every year, more than 10,000 patients in the United States need a transplant, and about half of them do not find a matching donor. They rely on Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation and other registries to save their lives by finding their Miracle Matches.

Processing each potential donor in the laboratory costs $60, and unless this is done, that donor cannot be found by a patient in need.  Thanks to Gift of Life's outstanding recruitment efforts, the need for funding continues to grow.  In 2011, the Maccabeats began to organize bone marrow drives at their concerts, to raise awareness and recruit potential donors.  In the process of setting up these drives with Gift of Life, they learned of the urgent need for funding to get all potential donors added to the registry.

Committed to ensuring that every potential life-saving match is found, the Maccabeats teamed up with their friend Mayim Bialik, another avid supporter of Gift of LIfe.  Together, they launched the Judy Greenberg Memorial Miracle Match Campaign.  With the overwhelming support of fans around the world, the campaign raised over $80,000 in just eight days.

Since its inception, the campaign has raised over $109,000, which has gone directly towards the processing of 2,687 donor kits, including those recruited at Maccabeats concerts nationwide. To date, the campaign has led to 45 donor matches and 13 transplants.  In addition, two people who swabbed at Maccabeats concerts have been identified as life-saving donors.

You can help save lives in three separate ways: spreading the word on social media, donating if you can, and making sure everyone you know is a member of the bone marrow registry.
